Strategic Insights from Industry Leaders

With Bavaria Makes, we will make Bavaria a sustainable, globally leading AM high-tech location within 10 years. AM has reached a level of maturity where it needs to be integrated to advance conventional manufacturing. Current approaches are hard to integrate, maintain, and scale. Companies struggle with lack of interoperability, manual handling, and high efforts to industrialize R&D results, to name a few. Bavaria Makes is the alliance of Bavarian champions in ONE ecosystem with focused hubs - Research, Enterprises, and SMEs. Joining forces of Bavarian global companies with universities and SMEs makes us faster and better. Creating globally successful champions for industrial 3D printing along the entire value chain is ensured in competition with China and the USA. The transformation to a circular economy and sustainability of Bavarian companies is accelerated by AM. Start-ups are increasingly settling in Bavaria and are more successful worldwide.

With Bavaria Makes, we are driving competitive Additive Manufacturing forward in Bavaria over the next decade, strengthening key industries like aerospace and creating additional jobs in digital manufacturing. By combining cutting-edge research with industrial applications and agile consortia, we are creating synergies extending to other sectors such as medical technology, energy, and turbomachinery. Bavaria Makes should serve as a roadmap for future investments and funding to sustainably strengthen our economic region. We at EOS are proud to contribute to this initiative.

With Bavaria Makes, we are ensuring that Bavarian machine manufacturers and users will still be internationally competitive in 10 years' time. In order to accelerate the ramp-up of additive manufacturing, a significant increase in machine productivity and a high level of standardization in the overall process chain are required. Our goal is to achieve a competitive manufacturing cost level compared to conventional processes and to relocate jobs from abroad to Bavaria. Bavaria Makes is the first competence center in Germany that is 100% geared towards the needs of industrial users and provides complete physical and digital process chains in one place. The knowledge management of the gained know-how is to be secured by long-term financed basic personnel.

Exposed to the competitive pressure from China, both in machinery and service sectors, Bavaria Makes brings the Free State of Bavaria into an international leadership position in the use of industrialized additive manufacturing technologies. Bavaria Makes differs from classical cooperations as here, for the first time, internationally leading corporations collaborate with medium-sized companies, universities, and associations. Bavaria Makes serves as a catalyst for the Bavarian industry by leveraging know-how transfer, cooperation, targeted R&D projects, and the support of the Free State of Bavaria.

With its collaborative approach, Bavaria Makes will help position Bavaria as a global leader in advanced manufacturing, creating economic growth and high-skilled jobs. By prioritizing research and development, emphasizing sustainable practices and materials, and adapting quickly to industry dynamics, Bavaria Makes provides comprehensive support from concept development to commercialization. This all bodes well and aligns very closely with our own vision. In fact, our new name, Colibrium Additive, represents ‘collaboration’ and ‘equilibrium’ and the role we strive to serve our industry—educating regulators, partnering with customers to deploy industrial additive technology, and supporting universities to encourage the next generation of additive talent—while providing balance and pragmatism during a period of change in our industry.

Dr. Andreas Lessmann, Colibrium Additive, Managing Director, General Electric Deutschland Holding GmbH

At Oerlikon, our commitment to the Bavaria Makes initiative stems from our recognition of the critical need for collaborative innovation in AM. With our extensive expertise in developing new materials and printing high-performance parts for cutting edge applications, we understand the pressing challenges and opportunities within the industry. Bavaria Makes represents a crucial platform for overcoming technical roadblocks and developing processes for new, high-performance materials. By bringing together leading companies, SMEs, and academic institutions in a focused ecosystem, this initiative ensures that Bavaria remains at the forefront of global competitiveness in AM technologies. The economic benefits of Bavaria Makes are clear: by fostering collaboration and leveraging shared knowledge, we will not only accelerate technological advancements but also enhance the sustainability and efficiency of manufacturing processes across various industries. This synergy will create high-quality jobs and maintain Bavaria’s position as a leading economic region in the era of digital manufacturing.
